• The lateral funiculus transmits the contralateral corticospinal and spinothalamic tracts.
• These fibers cross through the anterior white commissure to form the anterolateral system in the lateral funiculus.
• Lateral vestibulospinal fibers descend uncrossed, or ipsilateral, in the anterior portion of the lateral funiculus of the spinal cord.
• Most of these fibers cross over to the contralateral lateral funiculus via the anterior white commissure and through the superior cerebellar peduncle.
• Having crossed over at the middle line, they pass down in the posterior part of the lateral funiculus as the lateral corticospinal tract.
• A lateral cutting of the spinal cord results in the transection of both ipsilateral posterior column and lateral funiculus and this produces Brown-S閝uard syndrome.
• Passing through the lateral funiculus of the medulla spinalis, they emerge on its surface and unite to form a single trunk, which ascends between the ligamentum denticulatum and the posterior roots of the spinal nerves; enters the skull through the foramen magnum, and is then directed to the jugular foramen, through which it passes, lying in the same sheath of dura mater as the vagus, but separated from it by a fold of the arachnoid.
